He was a Polish general; one of the leaders, who made the resurrection of the Polish nation in 1918 possible. He was also socially involved and active.

His most important functions were:
- Commander of the Sokol Field Teams in 1913
- Commander of the Legions, from March 16 to April 2, 1915
- Acting Commander of the Legions from 4 to 13 November 1916
- Supreme Commander of all Polish Forces from October 4, 1918
- Commander of the Northern Front during the Polish-Bolshevik war
- General Inspector of the Volunteer Army in 1920
- Chairman of the Citizens' Executive Committee for National Defense in 1920
- President of the Supreme Council of the Labor Party in 1937
- Minister without portfolio in the second government of Władysław Sikorski in October 1939
- scoutmaster, chairman of the ZHP
- president of the Polish Red Cross Committee.
He also was a political and social activist and bachelor of the Orders of the White Eagle and Virtuti Militari.
